Bowel cancer usually occurs in people over the age of 50, these symptoms in younger people are often thought to be due to other bowel problems, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or ulcerative colitis. These include piles, infections or inflammatory bowel disease. It is the combination of symptoms and age that is important and will alert the doctor to the possibility of bowel cancer.
The symptoms of large bowel cancer can be:
- A lump in the right side of your abdomen, or in your rectum
- Unknown weight loss
- Pain in the tummy (abdomen) or back passage
- A straining feeling in the rectum
- Bleeding from the back passage (rectum) or blood in your stools
- Anemia caused by the tumor bleeding. This can lead to tiredness and sometimes breathlessness
