Taking vitamins and other nutritional supplements can be good for your health, but taking too many can be dangerous. A new study shows high doses of antioxidant supplements such as vitamins C and E may increase your risk of cancer.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute accidentally made the discovery during stem cell research to treat heart disease.
They were looking for a way to reduce genetic abnormalities that occur when they try to multiply human heart stem cells. They found that adding high doses of vitamins C and E caused the stem cells to develop genetic abnormalities that predisposed them to cancer.
According to Dr. Eduardo Marban, “the levels that we found to be optimal for cell growth are the normal levels in the body of people taking normal diets, and the ones we found tremendous increase in genetic abnormalities are in the same range as people taking massive supplements.”
Dr Marban said taking one multivitamin a day is fine, but if you’re taking ten to 100 times the amount in a daily multivitamin, you may be increasing your risk of cancer.
